Neck tattoos require some careful consideration before having them done. The first consideration is your tolerance for pain. The neck is one of the most painful area you can have a tattoo because it is a highly sensitive area. The second consideration is healing time, your neck is moved around a lot which means that healing the tattoo will take longer than usual–unless you are willing to wear a neck collar while the tat is healing. The third consideration is visibility, unlike tattoos in the arm, chest, legs or back, the neck area cannot be hidden by a shirt, the tattoo is very difficult to conceal, so if you are ready to show case your tattoo 24×7, then by all means, get a neck tattoo. Here are some ideas for neck tattoo designs.

The most popular choice for neck tattoos are probably tribal tattoos. The reason is because the neck area is such a small area, not all designs may work well, but the intricacies and symmetrical nature of tribal designs makes perfect sense for a neck tattoo. Some of the tribal tattoos that can get you started in your choice as Polynesian tattoos, Hawaiian tattoos, Maori tattoos, Haida tattoos and Samoan tattoos just to name a few. It will be good to research first the kind of tribal tattoo that you would like because each of them have meaning and significance. Once you have your designs shortlisted, it might be a good idea to try the tattoo design out as a temporary tattoo–why? because if you are unhappy with the design, the tattoo removal process is just as painful, if not more than the tattooing process, so you need to be sure.

Other popular design choices for tattoos on the neck are animal images such as dolphins, lizards and sea turtles–tribal arrows can also be added to those choices. Haida tribal tattoos consist mainly of animal images and bird images, so if you are an animal lover, Haida tribal tattoos may work well for you.

Not to be left out is the dragon tattoo. The dragon tattoo can fit virtually anywhere in the body, and it is one of the designs which can work really great in the neck area. The curvatures of the dragon enables the tattoo artist to work this intricate design on such as small area like the neck. The dragon can be drawn as flying or breathing fire–or flying while breathing fire, take your pick.
